Library Lions Gala 2010

The New York Public Library hosted its biggest event of the year this past week. The Library Lions Gala is an evening which annually honors people who have made outstanding cultural and educational accomplishments which have improved society’s understanding and appreciation for the surrounding world. Over 600 writers, celebrities and government and business leaders attend this glamorous black tie event every year, while this year’s attendees included, but were not limited to, Martha Stewart, Tory Burch, Christina Ricci, Desiree Rogers, Jamie Tisch and Victoria Steele.

This year’s gala honored novelist Malcolm Gladwell, screenwriter Ethan Hawke, leader of the New York Public Library Paul LeClerc, writer and actor Steve Martin, and author Zadie Smith.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is a serious issue that has been present for years. Hundreds of organizations, such as the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, co-founded by Kelly Chapman Meyer, Marion Laurie, Anne Douglas, Quinn Ezralow and Jamie Tisch, work fervently to find a cure and promote breast care awareness around the world.

Many other companies and organizations have been finding creative ways to show their support for the battle against breast cancer during the month of October, nationally known as the breast cancer awareness month. The NFL players are all sporting pink gear, celebrities take part in pink fashion parties, and many stores are selling pink ribbon products- even pink wigs!

Another fun, and certainly sweet way a company showed its support for this important cause was by manufacturing pink candy. Yes, M&M has created packages of the much-loved chocolate treat- in shades of pink! What a wonderful way to cheer patients, friends, and loved ones.

Fighting Ovarian Cancer: WCRF with Jamie Tisch

Ovarian cancer is the most fatal cancer of the woman’s reproductive system. The symptoms can include nausea, bloating, frequent urination and pain or pressure in the pelvis. These symptoms can result from many other relatively harmless conditions, and in the case of ovarian cancer, the symptoms are only apparent once the cancer is at an advanced stage.

The late detection of ovarian cancer is the main cause of the high death rate. Therefore, prevention of this cancer is very important. Pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives are believed to help prevent the cancer from developing. For older women, some recommend surgically removing the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Organizations like the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, co-founded by Jamie Tisch and four other women, work to promote awareness of ovarian cancer in women over the age of 65.

News in Early Detection of Cervical Cancer

One of the biggest problems of cervical cancer is late diagnosis. A few months ago that changed when a new method was developed to facilitate early diagnosis. Indeed, in the UK, cervical cancer screening starts as early as 25 even though the occurrence of the disease in women at this age is extremely rare. This new method was developed after it was discovered that it took time for younger women to receive a full pelvic examination when going to their GPs complaining of abnormal bleeding. But this changed recently as GPs today are given an algorithm to follow so they know how to manage their patients with these symptoms. If abnormalities in the cervix are diagnosed early on, cervical cancer can be treated better. Living in New York, Jamie Tisch has worked hard raising funds to support the Women’s Cancer Research Fund which she co-founded.

Some Basic Facts about Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is affecting tons of people today.  In fact, according to statistics, during their lifetime, a staggering one in eight women will be inflicted with this disease.  As well, it has the second highest mortality rate of all cancers in America, following lung cancer.  Research has not found a reason why it affects certain women; only a few risk factors have been identified, which include:  genes:  those with BRCA1 and BRCA2 have more chance of contracting the disease:  a simple test can be taken to determine if you have that and you might want to do it if someone in your family has had breast cancer. Age:  the older you get, the greater your chances are of contracting the disease.  Menstrual factors:  those who begin periods before 12 or go through menopause after 55.  As well, those who are overweight or taking birth control pills, dense breasts, only having kids after 35 (or not having kids at all), or using hormone replacement therapy.  The Women’s Cancer Research Fund aims to “save lives by raising critical funds to help fast track more effective approaches to the early diagnosis of women’s cancers,” and was co-founded by Jamie Tisch.

The Women’s Cancer Research Fund, co-founded by Kelly Chapman Meyer, Marion Laurie, Anne Douglas, Quinn Ezralow and Jamie Tisch is certainly appreciative to its major donors.  One of these major donors, Art of Grace, is truly a unique company.  They are a non-profit foundation with the sole purpose of helping to elevate awareness and support for individuals, corporations and non-profit foundations that are working to change the world.

They believe that the world can be changed, as they say, “One word, one note and one idea at a time” and they encourage others to help in this endeavor.

Jamie Tisch from the Broad Contemporary Art Museum Opening

Here is a beautiful picture of Jamie Tisch from the opening of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum, now part of the Los Angeles County Art Museum.

Over 1100 guests attended the star-studded event including entertainment industry figures, artists, executives and more.  The event raised more than $5 million overall.

The benefactors of the newest addition were Edythe and Eli Broad.  Mr. Broad, a serious collector of contemporary art, has over two thousand pieces.

The event was enjoyed by all, including Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie, Jamie Tisch, Jamie Gertz and so many others.

Important Women Helping the Women’s Cancer Research Fund: Jamie Tisch, Hilary Swank

Many important women have worked tirelessly with the Women’s Cancer Research Fund to raise money for cancer research.  Two years ago, EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund honored Hilary Swank for her work in fighting cancer.  Founded by Kelly Meyer, Anne Douglas, Quinn Ezralow, Marion Laurie and Jamie Tisch, the Women’s Cancer Research Fund holds an annual gala called the Unforgettable Evening. They raise much needed funds each year for revolutionary cancer research.

In 2008, they honored Oscar winner and women’s cancer advocate Hilary Swank with the 2008 Courage Award.  The award marked her efforts to further cancer research and education and highlighted her commitment to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.  The program, created in partnership with Pantene and EIF’s WCRF, encourages people to grow, cut and donate their healthy hair to make wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.
